We are blessed to live in a mysterious and wonderful Africa, synonymous with magnificence, explorations and breathtaking ‘back to nature experiences’. However, sadly some children no longer experience these journeys and have not been able to return to nature, and don’t know what it means to find prized treasures, only found in nature. To collect a spray of wild grasses or to identify strange and wonderful animal tracks have become quite unfamiliar to many children these days. Coupled with this, children are rarely exposed to animals and are denied the opportunity to interact with animals, and sadly these children are deprived of the magical sensation of patting, cuddling, and grooming an animal. In a world which is overwrought by climate change and which suffers ecological threats on a daily basis, it has now become even more imperative that children (tomorrow’s leaders) are given a clear understanding of what each creature’s essential role is in an ecosystem. For example, it is important that they know why there are ants and bees and more importantly what critical roll these little creatures play in an eco-system. The fact that everyday excursions into nature has sadly been taken for granted in an everincreasing fast paced world, became evident during the corona pandemic, where children were simply not able to go outside, to play with animals, to walk in nature and more importantly to breathe fresh air. It goes without saying that for many children, vegetables come from a supermarket and so do the other natural foods that we eat. This is what we want to change, by creating awareness by making sure that every child has a chance to learn how to plant a seed, to water it, to nurture it and ultimately to experience the satisfaction of harvesting the fruits of its hard work. With this in mind – as part of the Kindergarten’s fundamental activities, vegetables will be planted on the premises by each child, who will be provided with his or her own little wooden box, where different types of vegetables will be grown, and in so doing, the child will get to experience this wonderful miracle, as well as being delicately introduced to basic responsibilities by the child having to care for its own little vegetable garden in order for it to flourish. “Die Löwenkinder = The Lion Cups’ strive to become little explorers, developing into exceptional adults and wonderful human beings, who can ultimately lead by example and make a difference in tomorrow’s world.
